Why Do We Call It Black Friday? The Beginnings of Black Friday
You have probably heard of "Black Friday". This is the the day after Thanksgiving when retail outlets offer special early bird sales and deals for the Holiday season. You may be familiar with getting up incredibly early in order to get some great bargains at stores. If this is the case, you are sure not alone. Find out more about the best of Black Friday and even Cyber Monday by visiting this site devoted to both.

Every year the stores are jam packed with mobs of shoppers who are looking to save some money by purchasing items at the lowest possible prices. If you have ever wondered why it is called Black Friday or how this tradition started, read on to learn more about the history of retail's biggest day of the year.

This shoppers' holiday actually got its name in two very different ways. Shopping malls were simply packed with people looking for a deal once this tradition got started. Sadly what happened because of this was a number of road accidents as well as fights between people crowded together. Back in 1966, the Philadelphia Police Department coined the term "Black Friday" to describe this phenomenon.

The other meaning of the term came later on, originating from an accounting term which means profit for retailers. The phrase “in the red” indicates loss where as “being in black” indicates profit. The day after Thanksgiving started to feel like a gold mine to retailers as more and more people came to these sales.

Ever since the very first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, in 1924, Black Friday has marked the start of the Holiday shopping season. Before it was known by what we call it now, it was simply "After Thanksgiving Sales". It was the busiest day of the year as it is now. During the Great Depression, President Roosevelt changed the date of Thanksgiving to a week earlier so that merchants could have more shopping days in the season in which to sell their wares.

Black Friday has become very popular these days, so many large retailers open up as early as at Midnight on Thanksgiving so that give most of the hours during the day for the shoppers.black friday
